Beersheba Captured Cannon
Reviving History: McDougall Weldments Restores a Beersheba Cannon;
At McDougall Weldments, we take pride in not just serving Australia’s agricultural community but also in preserving its history. One of our recent projects allowed us to connect with the past in a meaningful way: the meticulous restoration of a historic cannon captured during the Charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba.
The Story of Beersheba
On October 31, 1917, the soldiers of the Australian Light Horse made history with a legendary charge on the town of Beersheba. This daring World War I assault led to the capture of vital resources and enemy artillery, including the very cannon we recently restored. It stands as a testament to the courage and strategic brilliance that defined the event, often referred to as the last great cavalry charge in history.
Restoring a Piece of History
When entrusted with this project, our team knew it was more than a restoration—it was a tribute to those who fought and sacrificed.
The cannon had endured decades of exposure and required a delicate yet precise approach to bring it back to life:
Corrosion Removal: The surface was carefully stripped of rust and grime using advanced sandblasting techniques.
Structural Repairs: Damaged sections were skillfully repaired through welding and fabrication while preserving the original integrity.
Authentic Finish: A historically accurate paint job completed the restoration, ensuring the piece reflected its original wartime appearance.
Every step was undertaken with deep respect for the historical significance of the artifact, blending modern craftsmanship with a passion for preserving the past.
On Display for Future Generations
Now proudly displayed in Western Australia, this cannon serves as a lasting reminder of the bravery of the 4th Light Horse Brigade. Visitors can experience a tangible connection to history while appreciating the care and dedication that went into its restoration.
